Understanding Bank Asset Size and FDIC Reporting
Commercial bank asset size is the primary benchmark used by regulatory bodies like the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the Federal Reserve Board, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to monitor systemic financial stability. Consolidated assets encompass all cash reserves, securities, retail mortgages, commercial loans, and investment portfolios held by the financial institution.
National Bank Charters (NAT)
National banks are chartered directly by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). They must include "National Association" or "N.A." in their official legal titles and are mandatory members of the Federal Reserve System.
State Chartered Banks (SMB / SNM)
State banks receive charters from state banking departments. They may choose to be Federal Reserve members (State Member Banks - SMB) or non-members regulated directly by the FDIC (State Non-Member Banks - SNM).
